The Real Story of the Paula Deen Controversy You have Not Heard from the Media
***ASK BILL: I keep hearing that we are to both pray and meditate on the Word of God. Is there a difference between this kind of meditation and that promoted by various Eastern religions? Is it okay for a Christian to meditate?
ANSWER: ABSOLUTELY there is a difference. It is what you are meditating on! The New Age and Eastern mysticism movements have people meditation on any number of things from yourself, to the air, to a grasshopper. A Believer meditates on the Word of God. It should be part of the spiritual life of EVERY Believer to meditate..on God's Word as it instructs us to do! "I meditate on your precepts and consider your ways." Psalm 119:15
The real story of the Paula Deen controversy you have NOT heard from the media! I am not going to deal with the racial aspects of the Paula Deen controversy, since I have often dealt with race over the years. The racial slurs Paula Deen has admitted to using are reprehensible. They are NOT the words of someone who views "all men are created equal" as they have been by God their Creator. Recently, I dealt with the racial aspect of the George Zimmerman case, and here is a link to that Devotional.
What I do want to deal with is the reaction from Corporate America when the Paula Deen controversy over her use of racial slurs hit the news. Her popular TV program was immediately cancelled by The Food Network. Despite a loyal following, QVC which has profited for years off of Deen, also cut all ties with her. Over the following weeks, one by one, Target and numerous corporate partners of Deen's immediately cut all ties with her.
Why? In the year 2013, in this age of "political correctness," you simply can't be part of Corporate America if you use, or have used in the past, any sort of racial slurs (unless you are black). You also can't say anything against those who have chosen to commit the sin of homosexuality (unless you have chosen to engage in such deviant and sinful acts). You will immediately be labeled as a racist or homophobe!
Here is the sad truth of where we are at in the year of 2013. If Paula Deen, instead of having her racial slurs from decades ago made public, she would have announced she had been "in the closet" for the past 30 years and wanted the world to know she was a "lesbian," she would not have lost ONE corporate partner and most likely would have gained dozens of new ones! She would have received a phone call from President Obama to congratulate her. Instead of being ridiculed, she would have been held up as a beautiful, brave, woman to be admired and supported!!!
I love you and care about you so much. The Bible says that in the last day, the Truth will become a lie and the lie will become the truth. Here we are. A cultural issue like this is simply another example of what the Bible warned us to expect. The real story in this Paula Deen saga is not that she used racial slurs years ago, but what you can and can't say in 2013 and have the support of Corporate America.
If you are pro-homosexual, pro-baby killing, pro-Islam, anti-Bible and Christian, you are assured of being accepted by the mainstream culture. If you take any Biblical position on the issues of the day, you will be shunned by not just corporate America, but the society at large. Use the Paula Deen controversy as a teachable moment that as Christians, our message may be rejected by most, but it is still our commandment from God and responsibility to share HIS Truth and the Gospel with this hurting and lost generation.
In His love and service, Your friend and brother in Christ,
